CSK Clarifies On Dewald Brevis Signing Following R Ashwin’s Remarks

4 Min Read

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have come out with an official statement explaining the details of their mid-season pick-up of Dewald Brevis in the IPL 2025 season. The clarification is in response to recent remarks from seasoned spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube show, where he questioned the financial details of Brevis’s signing.

What R Ashwin Said About Dewald Brevis and CSK

While on a video chat, R Ashwin suggested that South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis could have been signed by CSK over the economy cap.

Two or three teams were in talks with him but could not get him the extra money he wanted,” Ashwin said.

He was unsold in the auction. He probably told CSK,’ If I come late in the season, I am going to want to make more money.’ CSK got him paid, and that is how he got there,” he continued.

Ashwin suggested that there could have been some kind of negotiations above the auction reserve price, which might have been in contravention of IPL replacement player salary cap regulations.

IPL Rules on Mid-Season Replacement Players

According to the formal IPL 2025–27 Player Rules, a replacement player during the mid-season cannot be signed for anything above the fee of the player being replaced. As per Clause 6.6, the league charge for these replacements shall be proportionally calculated, depending on how many matches are left in the season and other deductions specified in the Player Contract.

Dewald Brevis Replaced Injured Gurjapneet Singh

Dewald Brevis was signed in April 2025 by CSK as a replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh, who was purchased for INR 2.2 crore during the IPL auction in Jeddah but later ruled out of the tournament. Brevis, who failed to find any buyer during the auction, was later recruited into the team as a mid-season recruit.

CSK Clarifies: Brevis Signed for INR 2.2 Crore in Full Compliance

Chennai Super Kings, in response to the claims, posted a formal denial of any violation of the IPL’s salary rules.

“Dewald Brevis was signed in April 2025 for INR 2.2 crore, which is the same amount for which Gurjapneet Singh was purchased at the auction,” the franchise stated.

CSK made a point to state that the whole process conformed to the official guidelines of the IPL, specifically Clause 6.6 of the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, which covers replacement player contracts. The franchise also referred to the IPL media advisory dated April 18, wherein the IPL publicly announced the terms of Brevis’s signing.

Official Confirmation and Media Transparency

CSK also conveyed that the signing of Dewald Brevis truly complied with the IPL rules and regulations, and was announced publicly through IPL’s official media outlet, so that there could be no doubt about it being a valid transaction.

Dewald Brevis’ signing was within IPL rules, says CSK

The Chennai Super Kings have strongly defended the legality of the Dewald Brevis signing during the season, once again reiterating that it followed IPL’s player replacement rules. While Ashwin’s comments caused a debate, the franchise has said that everything contractually and financially done was open and legal.

As Brevis builds in stature, particularly following a belligerent performance in the second part of IPL 2025, such a clarification might quell concerns regarding how franchises manage mid-season purchases under tight IPL coaches.
