MS Dhoni’s DRS Decision Backfires: In the third over of the match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli survived a close DRS call after MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad decided to review it. This followed a strong appeal from Khaleel Ahmed on Friday, February 28.
MS Dhoni’s DRS Decision Backfires After Khaleel Ahmed’s Bold Appeal
Khaleel bowled a full delivery from the left-arm over, and Kohli missed his usual flick shot. The on-field umpire didn’t react, despite Khaleel’s strong appeal and the loud support from the Chennai crowd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Khaleel was so sure that he immediately signaled to Dhoni to use the review. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad then made the “T” signal to the umpire. The replays showed that the ball was pitching outside the leg stump, so Kohli survived the call. However, this meant CSK lost a review early in the game.

RCB was batting first after Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and chose to field. There were two key changes in both teams’ playing XIs. For the hosts, Matheesha Pathirana replaced Nathan Ellis. Pathirana missed CSK’s opening game against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 because of an injury. For RCB, Rasikh Salam was replaced by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who missed the match against Kolkata Knight Riders due to a minor injury.
The powerplay was productive for RCB, as they scored 56 runs in the first six overs. Phil Salt was dismissed during this phase but had scored 32 off 16 balls. Kohli, on the other hand, took his time to settle and was on 11 off 15 balls at the end of the powerplay. At the time of writing, RCB had scored 177 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
