Coach Brendon McCullum supported Jos Buttler to step up and play an important role for England after Buttler gave up his position as the white-ball captain following a poor performance in the Champions Trophy.
Brendon McCullum Backs Jos Buttler to Lead England’s Revival
England faced their third consecutive defeat on Saturday, losing to South Africa by seven wickets after a disappointing performance in Karachi. As a result, they finished at the bottom of Group B without earning a single point.
With their elimination already confirmed, England was bowled out for 179 in 38.2 overs, with Joe Root top-scoring at 37.
South Africa successfully chased down the target in 29.1 overs, losing three wickets. Rassie van der Dussen remained unbeaten on 72, while Heinrich Klaasen contributed 64.
England’s Tough Road Ahead After Seven Consecutive Losses
Earlier, England had lost by five wickets to Australia and then suffered an eight-run defeat to Afghanistan.
Buttler made decent starts in all three of his innings, scoring a total of 82 runs, but he couldn’t find the explosive form that has made him one of the most dangerous batters in white-ball cricket.
England have lost their last seven one-day internationals, winning only 18 out of 45 matches with Buttler as captain. However, Brendon McCullum stated that the 34-year-old remains an important part of the team, which is in need of rebuilding.
“We still see Jos as obviously a big player within that and he’s got a huge role to play,” said McCullum, who became England’s white-ball coach this year, while also continuing his role as the Test coach.
