Dale Steyn Gets Witty Reply By MI For His ‘300 Run’ Tweet’

5 Min Read

In a dramatic turn of events for Match No. 33 of IPL 2025, ex-South African speedster Dale Steyn’s daring guess of the very first 300-run innings in the history of IPL failed.

Steyn, who had earlier predicted a high-scoring thriller on April 17, had his hopes crushed as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) could make only 162/5 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Wankhede Stadium. Despite Steyn’s expectation, the aggregate of the game was 328 by the end.

Dale Steyn’s 300-Run Prediction: A Bold Bet

Dale Steyn had previously forecasted that April 17 would witness the very first 300-run innings in IPL history when SRH would play against MI. This was after SRH had produced a record-breaking performance earlier in the season, posting 286/6 against Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

With all the hype surrounding SRH’s explosive batting unit, Steyn went to social media to make his daring assertion:
“Small prophecy. On April 17, we’ll witness the first 300 in the IPL. Who knows, I might even be there to witness it happening.”

The Reality: SRH Fails to Post a Big Score

But as the match went on, it was becoming increasingly obvious that Steyn’s prophecy was unlikely to be realized. Sunrisers Hyderabad had only managed 76/2 at the midway point of their innings, and the 300-run dream now seemed distant. Steyn, who had remained hopeful, was compelled to modify his prediction, admitting the dream of 300 runs getting away.

By the time the innings was over, SRH had achieved a paltry 162/5 in 20 overs, a long way from the gargantuan 300-run mark that had been speculated. Steyn tongue-in-cheek updated his Twitter page with the fact of the matter:

“No 300 today unfortunately,” and went on to add, “So we might still see 300 tonight, it’ll just be both teams together.”

Why Steyn’s Prediction Fell Short: SRH’s Cautious Approach

Several had anticipated the game to be a run-feast, given the batting-friendly situation at Wankhede, along with the short boundaries and the fact that explosive batsmen such as Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Ishan Kishan were part of the SRH lineup. But SRH’s openers failed to deliver.

Rather than launching a swift attack, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head played it slow, the couple only managing 50 runs in the initial 7 overs, without registering even a single six.

Abhishek Sharma made 40 runs from 28 deliveries.

Travis Head made 28 runs from 29 balls, his first innings in more than a year, with a strike rate under 100 while facing more than 10 balls. The SRH openers set a slow tempo by batting in a defensive manner, and whilst the side contained some big hitters, they weren’t able to achieve the large scores expected from them.

Mumbai Indians Take the Most out of the Conditions

In contrast, the Mumbai Indians took full advantage of the opportunity they had when the toss was won and chose to bowl first. The MI bowlers were able to control things pretty well, restricting the top order batsmen for SRH to not much in the way of runs:

Will Jacks was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 14 runs off 3 overs, getting both Ishan Kishan and Travis Head. Jasprit Bumrah was economical with 1/21 off 4.

Hardik Pandya picked up the key wicket of Abhishek Sharma. Deepak Chahar was expensive at times, but he kept it tight during the death overs so SRH could not find any momentum.

The MI bowlers played to the conditions of the pitch as the ball gripped and slowed down, and SRH’s batsmen did not make enough of the opportunities during the first powerplay.
