Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has initiated an investigation against Sri Lankan cricketer and captain Dasun Shanaka regarding allegations he left a first-class match to play the ILT20 tournament for the Dubai Capitals on February 2. It follows his departure during a critical domestic match, which has raised questions about the circumstances that triggered his exit, including the communication aspects involving Dasun, his first-class team SSC (Sinhalese Sports Club), and Sri Lanka Cricket.
The chargesheet issued by SLC against Shanaka indicates that he forwarded misleading information to the first-class match referee, Wendell Labroo, making it seem as if he had to leave for a concussion. Allegations are that Shanaka left the game under dubious conditions, pending an inquiry from the SLC. In response, the Chief Executive Officer of SLC, Ashley de Silva, confirmed that the board and SSC would be making the inquiry.
In his defense, Shanaka spoke to ESPNcricinfo and clarified that both the SLC and the SSC were aware of his need to leave the match. Shanaka said he was dismissed on the morning of day three of the three-day match and wanted to be treated for an injury incurred during a sweep shot. Acting on the doctor’s advice, Shanaka received permission from a physiotherapist to fly to Dubai, to play for the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 tournament the very same evening.
He has said that he had properly informed all parties involved. “SLC and the club knew I had to go. I returned just because I was asked by the SSC to play this match. But my other team also needed me, as I had played a vital role in winning two matches in the tournament,” was Shanaka’s retort in self-defense.
While Shanaka is maintaining that pre-approved scenarios are a part of his leave, this complicates matters, given that he did leave a first-class match in the middle under seemingly questionable circumstances. The SLC CEO, Ashley de Silva, suggested a sort of double standard, reminding that allegedly former Sri Lankan cricketer Lasith Malinga played two matches on the same day.
For one of the matches, he took the field for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and then played a domestic match in Pallekele, creating several records. “-However, Malinga stayed until the end of both matches, unlike in this case, where Shanaka left without completing his involvement in the SSC match,” de Silva pointed out.
Shanaka’s execution for the SSC team was noteworthy during the first-class match against Moors Sporting Club, though there were controversies surrounding his departure. Shanaka added an excellent contribution with both bat and ball in the first innings, taking one wicket and scoring an impressive 123 runs from just 87 balls, with 88 of those runs coming from boundaries.
But once he left, the batting order of SSC collapsed, and as a result, Shanaka did not get to bowl during the second innings for Moors SC, and this duly complicated the match’s outcome.
That evening, Shanaka shifted quickly to the ILT20 to hector the Dubai Capitals against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. Coming to bad at number five, Shanaka made a blazing impact through an on-ground score of 34 runs from no more than 12 balls, which completed their total score of 217 runs. This blistering knock played a great role in the Capital’s victory.
Shanaka’s successful run in the ILT20 continued with three more matches for the Dubai Capitals after February 2. Since his departure back from the first-class match, none of the subsequent matches included Shanaka, which has added more fuel to the controversy surrounding the dualization of duties.
The investigations by Sri Lanka Cricket and SSC continue, and only the passage of time will reveal the nature of the response. This brings to light the difficult balance that those players, like Shanaka, will strike between domestic and international commitments, as well as potential conflict within the participating multi-tournament schedule. This investigation result will play a role in shaping the choices of both his future in domestic and international cricket.
The defense and the charges against Dasun Shanaka will clearly be a major focus as the investigation unfolds. The cricket community will keenly watch whether this case becomes a precedent for the treatment of such matters in the future.
The ongoing investigation into allegations of Dasun Shanaka having left a first-class match mid-way to participate in an ILT20 tournament will go with a heavyweight decision of the global cricket governing body. Shanaka blamed both the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and SSC for not taking a proper examination of why he abruptly left a match.
This incident has examined the commitment of players, transparency, and the management of multiple professional obligations in view of Shiraz’s adventure. The cricketing fraternity is looking forward to the resolution of this controversy.
