DC vs MI Run Out Hat-trick: Delhi Capitals Lose To Mumbai Indians In IPL 2025

Mumbai Indians (MI) emerged victorious over Delhi Capitals (DC) by a margin of 12 runs in the 29th match of IPL 2025 at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium.

The contest featured a surreal sequence of events in the final overs, in which Jasprit Bumrah executed an astonishing run-out cascade that showcased the brilliance of MI and culminated in a DC vs MI run-out hat-trick—but, remarkably, the event will not be officially classified as a hat-trick.

DC vs MI: A Hat-trick of Run-Outs

The match reached a dramatic point in the 19th over when the Delhi Capitals were on the lookout for 18 runs in two remaining overs. At that moment, Jasprit Bumrah was called upon to bowl the 19th over of the match, despite being somebody that you would expect to remain calm and collected while also being pretty accurate.

What transpired next was three run-outs in a matter of three balls, which was thrilling and something you certainly don’t see that often as an umpire, cost the Delhi Capitals the match, with MI taking the upper hand. On the first delivery of the over Ashutosh Sharma was unable to take a run. But with the next boundary, he was able to.

He opened his account with a four and raced to the scorecard for that over. Sharma hit a lap shot which went to third man for boundary on the second delivery of the over. The next delivery Sharma went attempting to score two runs to long on, a shot that thankfully the fielding could never stop hightailing it up to the bowler.

Ryan Rickelton threw a dart to Will Jacks at the stumps and Sharma was run out as he attempted to get back into his crease. With the MI having seized the upper hand, despite a low margin of runs, Kuldeep Yadav now attempted a compensatory run in the fifth delivery of that over, but as it turned out Will Jacks’ proficient fielding and arm would get another wicket. Yadav was run out as well.

Last but not least, on the final ball of the over, Mohit Sharma attempted to steal a single to retain the strike, but Mitchell Santner had other plans. Santner’s thunderbolt throw struck the stumps, affecting the runout and sealing Delhi’s destiny.

Even though Bumrah was at the eye of this extraordinary chain of events, the hat-trick will not be added to his name because the nature of the dismissals was run outs, not wickets.

Mumbai Indians Gain Upper Hand

The string of run-outs transformed what had been a closely fought game into a one-sided contest, with Delhi Capitals reduced to 193 runs, short of the target by 12 runs. Karun Nair had at one stage appeared to have taken the game away from Mumbai with an incredible 89-run innings, but the meltdown in the last overs guaranteed Mumbai’s win.

Mumbai Indians, who batted first after being put out of toss, posed a tough target of 206 runs with their decent total of 205/5 in 20 overs. The top performers with the bat were Tilak Verma (59 runs from 33 balls), Ryan Rickelton (41 runs from 25 balls), and Suryakumar Yadav (40 runs from 28 balls).

Delhi bowlers, particularly Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraaj Nigam, had a good day, but they could not stop the scoring spree of Mumbai’s batsmen.

DC’s Chase Struggle

Delhi Capitals had a shaky start, with their opener Jack Fraser McGurk being dismissed in the first over. But the partnership of Nair and Abhishek Porel (33 runs off 25 balls) brought some spark to DC.

However, the run-out avalanche in the 19th over was the turning point that killed all momentum. The last straw was when Nair ended up left without the strike while wickets fell around him as Delhi’s chase imploded under pressure.
