In a remarkable turn of events at the World Athletics Championships, debutant sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson emerged as the victor in the women’s 100m race, surpassing several well-known competitors to claim the top position.

The 23-year-old American, who began her race relatively inconspicuously from the ninth lane, displayed an impressive surge of speed, achieving a new tournament record of 10.65 seconds, as reported by Xinhua.

The competition witnessed a captivating showdown in the center stage as Jamaican veterans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson contended for supremacy. Despite Fraser-Pryce’s strong season-best performance of 10.77 seconds and Jackson’s impressive 10.72 seconds, both fell short in the face of Richardson’s triumphant achievement.

“I’m here. I’m the champion. I told you all. I’m not back, I’m better,” Richardson exclaimed in a moment of celebration. Her journey to this victory was marked by missing the Tokyo Olympic Games due to a suspension for cannabis use and failing to qualify for the previous year’s World Championships due to subpar performance.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, holder of five world champion titles in the event, revealed her decision to forego the 200m race, stating, “I am happy to do so because I will be able to rest a bit before the relay. I will probably come to the stands to watch and enjoy the competition and then run fast with my relay team.”

In the men’s triple jump, Hugues Fabrice Zango made history for Burkina Faso by securing their inaugural World Championships gold with a remarkable jump of 17.64m. Following him were Cuban athletes Lazaro Martinez and Cristian Napoles, who achieved jumps of 17.41m and 17.40m, respectively.

“I had so many difficulties and doubts, I have been struggling a lot. I had to travel a very long way to get this gold medal,” shared the 30-year-old Olympic bronze medalist, expressing pride in fulfilling his promise to make history.

China’s Olympic silver medalist, Zhu Yaming, attained fourth place with a jump of 17.15m.

Despite being this year’s world leader with a result of 17.87m, Jamaica’s Jaydon Hibbert faced disappointment in the final due to a right thigh injury sustained during his first jump.

Furthermore, Swedish athlete Daniel Stahl shattered the Championships record in the men’s discus throw, seizing the title with an impressive 71.46m. Slovenian Kristjan Ceh secured second place with 70.02m, while Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania claimed third with 68.85m.

Grant Holloway secured his third consecutive world title in the men’s 110m hurdles, sprinting to victory with a season-best time of 12.96 seconds.
