4 Min Read

In the Deodhar Trophy final, South Zone triumphed against East Zone. South Zone chose to bat in the crucial final after winning the toss. The South Zone’s top batsman, Rohan Kunnummal, received outstanding support from his bowlers in the second inning. The match flow is shown below.

South Zone’s batting

The opening pair for the South Zone, Kunnummal and captain Mayank Agarwal, utilised all 10 of their available overs. In the first powerplay, the openers scored 79 runs without losing a wicket. Kunnumal had a great strike rate and scored a century. He needed just 75 balls to score 107 runs. In 83 balls, the captain scored 63 runs. The pair opened together for 181 runs. The South Zone batters produced 164 runs in the middle powerplay despite losing wickets in a row following a century opening stand.  They were able to score 328 runs thanks to a half-century from Narayan Jagadeesan and a quick-fire cameo from Sai Kishore.

The East Zone bowlers were unable to bowl any maiden overs because they lacked bowling discipline. There were just two bowlers with an economy of less than 6 RPO: Shahbaz Ahmed and Utkarsh Singh. They combined for 20 overs and only gave up 105 runs. The most expensive bowler was Manisankar Murasingh, who gave up 52 runs in just seven overs. His bowling economy was 7.42 RPO. In his nine overs, Akash Deep too bowled at a rate of more than 7 RPO and gave up 66 runs.

East Zone’s batting

East Zone’s response, which involved chasing 328 runs, got off to a slow start as they lost three wickets with only 14 runs scored. Abhimanyu Easwaran (1), Utkarsh Singh (4) and Virat Singh (6), the top three batsmen, all scored in single digits. Saurabh Tiwary, the captain, entered the batting at number five. Tiwary got 28 runs in 33 balls, but he was unable to fully capitalise on his expertise. It appeared bleak for the East Zone as they managed to lose four wickets for 72 runs in 16 overs. As a result of Tiwary’s dismissal, Riyan Parag entered the crease. With two centuries already under his belt, Parag had his work cut out for him. Together with Kumar Kushagra, Parag shared a century stand for the sixth wicket. While wicketkeeper Kushagra got 68 runs from 58 balls, the former finished his innings with 95 runs in just 65 balls. The losing team lost 10 wickets for a total of 283 runs.

In contrast to their opponents, the South Zone bowlers bowled with great discipline and consistently got wickets. Together, Sai Kishore and Washington Sundar claimed four wickets while giving up 105 runs in 20 overs. The crucial wicket of Parag was also taken by Sundar. Additionally, two wickets were taken by Vidwath Kaverappa, Vasuki Koushik and Vijaykumar Vyshak.

As a result of his century, Rohan Kunnummal was named Player of the Match, and Riyan Parag was named Player of the Tournament for his 354 runs and 11 wickets.
