Esteemed sporting figures continue to grace the inaugural Khelo India Para Games in Delhi. Notably, former world championship medallist Anju Bobby George and ex-Indian hockey captain Viren Rasquinha were present, immersing themselves in the emotionally charged atmosphere of the Games.
The primary aim of these Games was to promote inclusivity and respect towards specially-abled athletes. Anju Bobby George emphasized how the Khelo India Para Games 2023 are playing a pivotal role in “bridging the societal gaps.”
“In the past, para-sports existed separately, lacking equal recognition. However, today, they receive equivalent acknowledgment on the same platform as able-bodied athletes. The level of competition and support is on par. These Games offer a nationwide opportunity, and witnessing the enthusiasm among children participating is truly heartening,” remarked Anju, who clinched the long jump bronze at the 2003 World Athletics Championship.
“These athletes are exemplary in their approach to life. Despite adversities, they pursue their goals through sports. Across various international tournaments, they have showcased exceptional talent. The initiative taken by the Government of India is commendable,” she added.
Former Indian men’s hockey captain Rasquinha also actively engaged at the Khelo India Para Games held at JLN Stadium. Both Anju and Rasquinha participated in the award ceremonies. Rasquinha emphasized how KIPG will contribute to nurturing talent in India.
“Often, when people observe para-athletes, they focus on disability rather than their remarkable abilities. Each one of them possesses immense talent. The inception of Khelo India Para Games in 2023 is a commendable step,” expressed Rasquinha.
“Competition is integral to sports. Strong domestic competitions are crucial. Khelo India Para Games will significantly benefit athletes throughout India,” he affirmed.
Devendra Jhajaria, the three-time Paralympics medal-winning javelin superstar, lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for organizing the Games. He highlighted how the tournament marks a significant chapter in Indian sports history.
“The first para-athletics championships took place in Bangalore in 2000, 23 years ago. Back then, facilities were limited. Seeing the extensive facilities provided now, I confidently credit one man for transforming our nation – Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose vision is steering India towards development. I firmly believe we are on the path to fulfilling his vision,” Jhajaria commented.
“Additionally, I met a member of the German delegation who remarked that they had never witnessed such a grand tournament. We are expanding our horizons globally. Today, I can proudly say that differently-abled athletes in our country are determined to carve a niche for themselves. As a seasoned athlete, I can attest that this represents the dawn of a new, progressive India,” he concluded.
The inaugural Khelo India Para Games 2023 in New Delhi are spread across three venues – Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, IGI Stadium, and Karni Singh Shooting Range. More than 1,400 athletes are participating in seven disciplines – athletics, shooting, archery, football, badminton, table tennis, and powerlifting.
