Spectators in cricket are usually safe from any injury but there are instances when some batters’ monstrous sixes have injured spectators. In cricket, the balls that are used are very hard and rigid so a fan sitting in the stadium can suffer a major injury if they are not paying attention to the game. When sixes reach the fans sitting in the stadium they often attempt to catch the ball. Not every fan is a great fielder and can sometimes even cause injuries to themselves.
Fortunately, there haven’t been many cases of spectators getting injured in cricket. Here are some instances when the spectators faced injuries in the stadiums due to the humungous sixes by these batters.
Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle is known for his hard-hitting batting style. The ‘Universe Boss’ often sets the T20 Leagues all over the world on fire with his batting. The West-Indian legend often deals in sixes when batting which makes it very less surprising that he is featured on this list. Gayle’s sixes at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the 2012 Indian Premier League (IPL) turned out to be harmful to a girl. Gayle scored 81 runs off 48 deliveries, smashing eight sixes. One of them struck the girl in the audience, causing the girl to suffer a nose injury.
Gayle went to the Mallya Hospital soon after hearing about the incident. The girl had been admitted there. The ‘Universe Boss’ was given the maximum Sixes award which he gave to the young fan.
David Miller
Yet another instance of someone getting injured comes from the Indian Premier League (IPL). IPL is one of the most well-known leagues in the world, but an incident that occurred during the IPL 2015 contest between Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings) and Kolkata Knight Riders shocked everyone. At Eden Gardens, the Knight Riders were playing Punjab. As normal, the stadium was heavily guarded to prevent any accidents.
Sadly, a police officer lost his sight after South African batsman David Miller was struck directly in the right eye by a six.
Cameron White
After sweeping the two-match Test series, India faced Australia in the second game of the three-match ODI series in Vizag. After 50 overs, Australia had a total of 289 for three. Cameron White scored 89 runs off 49 balls, including six fours and sixes. A spectator was struck in the face when one of the sixes was smashed towards long-on, where it rebounded and went into the first level.
