Football for a first time viewer is a simple game. The attacker scores goals while the goal-keeper saves them. But some of these keepers wrote their name in history for something totally different. Here is a look at some goalkeepers who scored the most goals.

René Higuita

René Higuita is one of the great goal-keepr from the Colombian national team. He was a very athletic goalkeeper during his time. His scorpion kick save against England in 1995 will always rank as one of the best displays of athleticism in football.

Together with his incredible saves, the former goalie from Colombia also had 43 goals scored during his playing days. He played the majority of his games in Medellin and Colombia throughout his career. In the 1990s, Higuita was a consistent member of the Colombian national team, making 68 appearances and tallying three goals.

Johnny Vegas Fernández 

Johnny Vegas Fernández scored 45 goals during his 13-year career. Besides contributing from penalty kicks, he also scored from open play. Throughout his career, Fernandez mainly played for Peruvian clubs. Interestingly, he made 14 transfers during his 13 years as a player before he retired in 2017.

Jorge Campos

Jorge Campos was a famous football player from Mexico. He scored 46 goals during his career, however not all of them came while he was a goalkeeper. Over his career, he also played as a striker, scoring 28 goals in that position.

Compos, one of the finest goalkeepers in history, played for almost every elite club in Mexico and America. In his career, he played for powerful clubs like LA Galaxy before retiring in 2004. Jorge Campos contributed significantly to the Mexico team from 1991 to 2004 and appeared 129 times for them.

José Luis Chilavert

The record for most goals scored by a goalkeeper on the international stage belongs to José Luis Chilavert, a former goalkeeper for Paraguay. Chilavert was a serious danger from set pieces and finished his career with 67 goals. Additionally, he became the first goalkeeper in history to score a hat-trick. Chilavert also played in Argentina, Spain, France, and other countries in addition to Paraguay. He retired in 2004.

Rogério Ceni

The Brazilian goalkeeper tops the list of goalkeepers having scored the most goals. Rogério Ceni played in a completely different class than the other goalkeepers on the list, who have all primarily scored off of penalties so far. Ceni in his career scored 131 goals. He was a nightmare in set-piece situations and scored 61 free kicks throughout his career. Ceni, who spent his whole playing career with Sao Paulo alone, is regarded as one of Brazilian football’s all-time great goalkeepers. He earned 17 appearances for the Brazilian national team as well. Now, the Brazilian is in charge of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
