The Indian’s men team during the first few Olympics was a force to be reckoned with. The Indian team holds this unique record which might never be broken in Olympics history.
India has won eight gold medals in its Olympic history. India won three gold medals as British India and the other five as an independent country.
While the record holders have eight gold medals it is doubtful that any other country will be able to break this record or match this record. The next best on this record is Germany with four gold medals. Germany won their one gold medal as West Germany.
India during their debut Olympics won their first gold medal as British India in 1928 when they defeated the hosts, the Netherlands. The score line was 3-0 in favor of India. In 1932 only three teams were playing so they played in a round-robin format where India emerged as the champions as China came in second and the hosts United States came in third. In 1936 India won the gold medal again by defeating the hosts, Germany in the finals by a whopping margin of 8-1.
The next Olympics were held after 12 years when India participated as an independent country for the first time. In 1948, India again won the gold medal this time defeating the host Great Britain by a 4-0 margin. In 1952, India won the gold medal by defeating the Netherlands with a 6-1 margin in the finals in Helsinki, Finland. In 1956 India won the gold medal defeating their neighbors Pakistan in the final by a 1-0 margin.
In 1960 India’s 6 consecutive gold medal streak came to an end as they lost to Pakistan in the finals. India was quick to bounce back as in the next Olympics in 1964, India took their revenge as they beat Pakistan in the finals by a 1-0 margin. In 1980, India won its 8th and last gold medal by defeating Spain with a 4-3 score line.
Along with eight gold medals, India has a solitary silver medal (1960) and three bronze medals (1968, 1972, 2020).
