Esports is one of the emerging industries in India. With the increased number of youths joining online gaming, esports is rising in India. Yet this is not a mainstream career for the youth in India. Perhaps, it may take a few years to see esports emerging as a prominent career option.
Esports in India has seen considerable growth over the past few years. If reports are to be believed, the average time spent by Indian youth in online gaming on their mobile phones lies between 1-6 hours per week. It started as a competition held usually during fests, events, and tournaments. But now, it has become quite famous among the youth, so much so that they don’t shy away from buying accessories and hardware for online gaming.
Now esports has become an Rs. 250-crore industry with over 6,00,000 players across the country. It is noteworthy that India has participated in many esports tournaments, including the Commonwealth Esports Championships.
Considering Esports as a Stable Career
Even though the infrastructure and environment of the country don’t support esports, youth are taking an active interest in pursuing esports as their career option. The only difference is there are significantly fewer online gaming developers in India. One can make a lot of money from esports, but that’s possible only when online gaming tournaments are organized, and players get a chance to participate. However, this seems to be too far when it comes to our country.
But that doesn’t mean you have to lose hope. If you are interested in Esports, you can surely think of pursuing it as an alternative career option. This is because there are still some career options that aren’t mainstream in esports. These career options are as follows:
- Data Handling: Various data are being generated in online gaming, and collecting, arranging, sorting and analysing those data are extremely important. Therefore, if you have a keen interest in online gaming but can’t choose it as your stable career, you can opt for online gaming data handling as a gig work.
- Game Developer: Game developers are in demand across the country. Because of the game developer, high-end games are being developed to provide the best gaming experience to the players. You can learn about game development through many courses and online resources. Many tech-based organizations are hiring game developers. You can also think of game development as a career option for yourself.
- Influencer: We live in an era in which influencer marketing is the new trend. Online gaming enthusiasts often enjoy watching the streaming of games. You can try your hands on this by becoming a gaming influencer. You can consider it as an alternate career option or your part-time work. This will help you see online gaming as a career and live your passion. Apart from this, you can write blogs on esports and online gaming.
India is still paving its way towards esports, and very soon, the country may see esports as a significant career option, just like any other sport. There are several other types of career options available in Esports industry today. Some of these include – social media manager, agents, sponsors, hosts, coaching, journalism, event management and much more.
