Indian gymnastics witnessed a historic moment on Sunday as Dipa Karmakar clinched the gold medal in the women’s vault event at the Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024 held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This remarkable feat marks the first time an Indian gymnast has ever secured a gold medal at the Asian Championships.

The History

Previously, Indian gymnasts had managed to win four bronze medals at the continental event. Dipa Karmakar herself had contributed to this tally with a third-place finish in the women’s vault back in 2015. Ashish Kumar (men’s floor exercise in 2006) and Pranati Nayak (women’s vault in 2019 and 2022) were the other Indian gymnasts to find a place on the podium.
