In a remarkable display of skill and determination, 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic emerged victorious against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in an unforgettable Cincinnati Masters final. The Serbian maestro saved a championship point, securing the title with a 5-7, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4) victory in what will be remembered as one of the greatest Masters 1000 matches.
Facing a set and a break deficit against the top seed, the 36-year-old Djokovic showcased his resilience, saving a crucial championship point at 5/6 in the second-set tie-break. This remarkable feat earned him his 39th ATP Masters 1000 title, extending his record.
Throughout the match, Djokovic battled not only his opponent but also the intense Cincinnati heat. Despite his struggles, a momentary lapse in Alcaraz’s service game at 4-3 in the second set opened the door for Djokovic, and he seized the opportunity to turn the tide.
As the match progressed to a decisive final-set tie-break, it was the 20-year-old Alcaraz who faced physical challenges, experiencing cramps in his right hand. Djokovic persevered and eventually converted his fifth championship point, leading to a triumphant celebration as he fell to the court.
The intense showdown between Djokovic and Alcaraz lasted for an impressive three hours and 49 minutes. Djokovic avenged his recent defeat to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, evening their ATP Head-to-Head series at 2-2.
Reflecting on the match, Djokovic expressed his astonishment, comparing it to some of the most memorable battles in his career. “It’s a crazy match that we’ve been through today… one of the most exciting and toughest mentally, emotionally, physically matches that I’ve ever had in my career,” he stated during the post-match press conference.
With this victory, Djokovic secured his place in history as the oldest champion in the tournament, surpassing the record set by Ken Rosewall at 35 years old. Meanwhile, Alcaraz made his mark as the youngest finalist since Pete Sampras in 1991.
Djokovic’s win also solidified his position in tennis history. He now holds the third-most tour-level titles on record, boasting 95 titles. Only Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) have more titles to their names.
While Alcaraz concludes the Cincinnati Masters as the No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings, Djokovic’s exceptional performance brings him within 20 points of the top spot. As the US Open approaches, Djokovic has a strong chance to reclaim the coveted No. 1 ranking, particularly considering Alcaraz’s need to defend 2,000 points at Flushing Meadows.
