WWE or professional wrestling has proven to be a great entertainment source for the last 40 plus years. Since the time of Hulk Hogan till today in the era of Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, faces and heels have been a significant part of WWE history. There have been some great faces and heels over the years. But do you know the meaning of faces and heels in WWE?

Face (Babyfaces)

A face (babyface) is a hero, “good guy,” or “fan favorite” wrestler in professional wrestling who is booked (written) by the company with the intention of receiving support from the crowd and who serves as a protagonist to the heels, who are the villainous antagonist or “bad guy” characters. Historically, they wrestle within the rules, refrain from cheating. They even conduct themselves honorably around the referee and the crowd.

Rey Mysterio, a face in the WWE since his debut, would approach any fan—often a young child—wearing a replica of his mask and touch their head with his head before a match for good luck. Other instances include Big Show throwing his hat to a fan when he was a face, and John Cena throwing his shirts and caps into the audience before entering a match. The face mannerism goes beyond the wrestling community. John Cena, a well-known face, once instantly apologized to China after referring to Taiwan as a nation, which is regarded as disrespectful to Chinese spectators.

Heels

A heel is a wrestler who represents a villain, “bad guy,” or “rulebreaker” in professional wrestling and acts as an adversary to the faces, who are the brave protagonists or “good guy” characters. A heel wrestler need not always act villainously. The majority of truly successful heels embrace other facets of their cunning personality. They use cheating to win or using foreign items. The heels just need to be booed or jeered by the crowd to be powerful characters.

The Undertaker, who has frequently alternated throughout his career between portraying a heel or a face, is another example of a dynamic heel. He literally sat on a throne, frequently in the form of the symbol used to represent him. He assumed the appearance of an occult priest throughout his tenure as the head of The Ministry of Darkness. He wore a black robe with a hood.

Current faces and heels

Currently the biggest faces in WWE RAW are Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, Edge and Seth Rollins. On the SmackDown brand the faces are Charlotte Flair, Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston.

The heels at WWE RAW include Austin Theory, Brock Lesnar, Dominik Mysterio and Finn Balor. On the SmackDown heels are Roman Reigns, The Usos, Paul Heyman and Gunther.
