DSG vs SEC: Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) remain in contention in the SA20 2025-26 playoffs as they recorded a thrilling two-wicket win against table leaders, Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC), in Gqeberha on Sunday. DSG needed a target of 159 runs to win, which they accomplished despite a midway collapse, thanks to the composure of their lower order.
This is the first victory for DSG on a merit basis, apart from their first match of the season, and has kept their season alive, with two matches remaining to be played.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape Recover Late to Post 158
Sunrisers Eastern Cape decided to bat first. But that proved to be quite challenging for them, especially when Quinton de Kock and Jonny Bairstow were sent back within the first four overs. This left SEC with a position of 26/2.
Middle-Order Consolidation
Matthew Breetzke (20 off 22)
Jordan Hermann (29 off 24)
The two put on a solid 38-run partnership to stem the slide. Both fell soon after, though, leading to another collapse as SEC lost three wickets for 23 runs, including Marco Jansen.
Tristan Stubbs’ Late Blitz Lifts SEC
Captain Tristan Stubbs played the decisive role in SEC’s innings. Partnering Lewis Gregory, Stubbs paced his knock expertly before exploding at the death.
Stubbs surged from 11 off 18 to 47 off 30
53 runs came off the final 18 balls
This late flourish propelled SEC to a competitive 158/5, giving them momentum heading into the break.
DSG’s Flying Start in the Run Chase
Durban’s Super Giants began the chase aggressively, racing to 49 runs in just four overs.
Explosive Opening Stand
Aiden Markram: 25 off 13
Marques Ackerman: 45 off 26
Both openers hit six fours in their innings, putting pressure on SEC before Senuran Muthusamy broke the partnership.
Middle-Order Collapse Brings SEC Back
But after the dismissal of Markram, Jos Buttler played a gritty but crucial knock of 22 off 22 balls. But DSG’s momentum was short-lived as they suffered a collapse of four wickets for 36 in five overs.
This phase included the wickets of:
Ackerman
Buttler
Heinrich Klaasen, who continued his run of low scores
The match suddenly tilted back in SEC’s favor.
DSG Tail Holds Nerve in Tense Finish
Although there were frequent wickets, DSG’s lower order managed to nibble away at the target. The final chase went down to the last over, and composure there by Evan Jones and Maphaka saw their side cross. This sealed a thrilling two-wicket victory, which kept their hopes of making the play-offs alive.
