During the UAE vs PNG CWC League match, spectator takes a stunning catch and takes a selfie with the ball.

On Wednesday, the UAE took on Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Nepal’s Kirtipur. UAE easily won the match thanks to a century by captain Muhammad Waseem, their 15th win in 35 matches. However, that was not the most talked-about aspect of the game.

A spectacular catch by a spectator as Waseem sent one sailing over long-on and into the stands really lit up the proceedings. The top-tier spectator ran around like a professional and pouched the catch as cleanly as a whistle. He quickly took out his phone and took a selfie with the ball to commemorate the occasion.

It’s not every day that you see catches taken in the stands so cleanly and with such authority. Typically, you will see efforts made but in vain. However, what we saw in this match was unique, and it provided a memorable moment for not only the person taking the catch, but also cricket fans all over the world.

PNG, who were sent on a leather hunt by the UAE captain, might be able to use the services of the gentleman in the stands and get him down on the ground to field for them!

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket World Cup both shared the video and selfie on Instagram.

In terms of the match itself, the UAE restricted PNG to a paltry 234/7 in 50 overs, with Hazrat Bilal taking 4/47 in 10 overs. Rohan Mustafa was frugal, conceding only 20 runs in 10 overs while picking up a wicket.

UAE easily defeated the target, winning with just over 11 overs to spare. Waseem batted brilliantly, scoring 119 off 76 balls. His inning featured six hits to the fence and up to 12 over the fence. Vriitya Aravind (33 off 56) contributed well.

The UAE’s victory moved them to 33 points, closing the gap on the United States, who are fifth in the CWC League 2 table with 35 points. PNG remains at the bottom of the table, with only 11 points from 36 matches. The CWC League 2 runs from August 2019 to March 2023 and is part of this year’s qualification process for the ICC World Cup. The top three teams in CWC League 2 will advance to the ICC World Cup Qualifier tournament, while the bottom four teams will compete in the ICC World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

Scotland currently leads the CWC League 2 table, with Oman and Namibia following close behind. The 2023 ICC World Cup will be held in India from October to November.
