England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is planning to start a global franchise T20 tournament called the World Club Championship. Champions League T20 ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2014. In this tournament, the best teams from the top domestic T20 leagues in the world played against each other. In the first season of 2009, Australia’s New South Wales team won the title. In the last season in 2014, Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders in the final to win the trophy.

This tournament was created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia (CA), and Cricket South Africa (CSA). But due to money problems and low viewers, CLT20 had to stop, which was a big loss at that time.

ECB’s New Plan: World Club Championship

ECB’s CEO Richard Gould recently said that bringing the World Club Championship is their next big plan. This tournament will be for both men and women and will give a new push to global franchise cricket. Gould also said that Champions League T20 was ahead of its time and could not meet business expectations but was a very good tournament.

Growth of Franchise Leagues Around the World

In the last few years, many new franchise leagues have started quickly. South Africa’s SA20, England’s The Hundred, UAE’s ILT20, and USA’s Major Cricket League are making global T20 cricket stronger. These leagues are preparing a good base for big events like the World Club Championship.

Role of IPL Franchises in World Club Championship

To run this new tournament, support from IPL franchises will be very important. Out of 10 IPL owners, 8 already run teams in other countries’ T20 leagues. Their involvement will give financial support and make the competition stronger.

Will This Tournament Change Global T20 Cricket?

The World Club Championship has a chance to continue the legacy of Champions League T20. This tournament will bring the top franchise teams from around the world together, giving fans great international T20 cricket to watch. ECB’s plan will take franchise cricket to new heights.
