ENG vs IND: Fast bowler Chris Woakes was included in England’s 14-member squad on Thursday, June 5, 2025, for the first Test against India, which starts on June 20 in Leeds. 36-year-old Chris Woakes recently made a comeback after a long ankle injury.
For the unversed, Chris Woakes has taken 181 wickets and scored 1,970 runs in 57 Test matches. He was also a key player in England’s big win against India at Lord’s during the 2018 series. Woakes, who scored 137\* and took 4 wickets in a big 2018 win vs India, will join Josh Tongue in playing for England Lions vs India A on Friday to get match practice before the June 20 Test.
Jamie Overton returned to the Test squad for the first time since his debut in June 2022, despite fracturing his right little finger during an ODI against West Indies on May 29. 31-year-old Jamie Overton, who recently played in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings, is “continues to be assessed and reviewed daily by the England medical team”, according to the ECB website.

The England squad, led by Ben Stokes, includes just one spinner – Shoaib Bashir – who impressed with nine wickets in their win over Zimbabwe in the only Test earlier this summer.
Young batter Jacob Bethell, part of the IPL-winning Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad, and seamer Sam Cook, who debuted against Zimbabwe, have also been named.
The ECB added, “Durham seamer Brydon Carse and the Warwickshire pair Jacob Bethell and Chris Woakes are included in the squad, having last featured during the Test tour of New Zealand in December.”
“Surrey’s Gus Atkinson was unavailable for selection due to a right hamstring injury sustained during the recent Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge,” it added
India’s tour of England will begin with the first Test at Headingley from June 20-24. The second Test will be held at Edgbaston from July 2-6. The third Test is scheduled at Lord’s from July 10-14, the fourth at Old Trafford from July 23-26, and the fifth and final Test will be played at The Oval from July 31 to August 4.
