Ethiopians Milkesa Mengesha and Tigist Ketema finished top in men’s and women’s race respectively, in the Berlin Marathon 2024.
Mengesha crossed the finish-line in 2:03:17 to record his personal best, the third fastest time in the world this year. He was followed by 24-year-old Cybrian Kotut of Kenya who finished the race in 2:03:22 for second place. Ethiopian Haymanot Alew finished third in 2:03:31.
Tigist Ketema dominated the women’s race triumphing in 2:16:42, the third fastest women’s time in the 50-year history of the Berlin Marathon. She led her Ethiopian compatriots Mestawot Fikir and Bosena Mulatie to the finish-line, the second and third-place finishers clocking 2:18:48 and 2:19:00 respectively.
Overall, Berlin Marathon 2024 produced outstanding performances, although no major records were broken. Taking both winning times into account, their aggregate of 4:19:59 made the 50th edition the twelfth fastest marathon in history and the fourth fastest ever in Berlin. For the first time in Berlin, four men went under 2:04. The anniversary edition attracted 58,212 starters from 161 countries.
It was the first Berlin Marathon without either Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge or Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele since 2014.

Kipchoge still holds the Berlin course record of 2:01:09 from 2022 while Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa set the women’s world record of 2:11:53 in the Berlin Marathon last year.
A record number of 58,212 runners from 161 nations were up for the Berlin challenge where more world records have been set than any other courses.
