The Union of European Football Associations’ main association football competition is the UEFA European Football Championship, also known as the Euro or less formally as the European Championship (UEFA). Senior men’s national teams from UEFA members compete in the event, which crowns the European continent’s champion. After the FIFA World Cup, it is the second-most-viewed football event in the world.
Euro Championship
A global audience of almost 300 million people watched the Euro 2012 championship. Except for 2020, when it was moved to 2021 because of the COVID-19 epidemic in Europe, the competition has been contested every four years since 1960. However, it has retained the name “Euro 2020.” It was previously known as the European Nations Cup and was scheduled to take place in the even-numbered year between FIFA World Cup competitions. The name was modified to its present form in 1968. The individual competitions have been referred to as “UEFA Euro” since 1996.
All teams, save the hosts, must first compete in the qualifying round to enter the event. Up until 2016, the champions were permitted but not required to participate in the FIFA Confederations Cup the following year. The winner competes in the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions beginning with the 2020 edition.
Ten national teams have won the sixteen European Championship competitions: Germany and Spain have each won three championships; Italy and France have each won two championships; while Greece, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Portugal have each won one championship. Spain is now the only team to have won back-to-back championships, doing so in 2008 and 2012.
Europe in 2021
Italy won the most recent competition, which took place in Europe in 2021, after defeating England in the championship game at Wembley Stadium in London on penalties. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, UEFA stated on March 17, 2020, that the Euro 2020 tournament would be moved up a year to June 11–July 11, 2021. The event was postponed to free up time in the calendar for the completion of domestic leagues. It had been halted to relieve pressure on the public services of the nations. To guarantee fans at the stadium, Dublin was also eliminated as a host city for Euro 2020, and Bilbao was replaced by Seville for the same reason.
European Championship
Italy won their second European Championship in the final, defeating first-time finalists England 3-2 on penalties after the score was 1-1 after extra time. The first premier pan-European football competition, which was staged in France under the name “European Nations Cup,” featured 17 teams. In the championship match in Paris, the Soviet Union defeated Yugoslavia 2-1 to claim victory.
Germany has participated in a record-tying six Euro finals, however. The Soviet Union, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Italy, Denmark, and the Netherlands are the other European heavyweights to have won the title. The UEFA European Championship is often held by one or two countries, but the 2020 edition was unique in that it was distributed throughout 11 locations in Europe. This action was taken by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to mark the 60th anniversary of the competition. It is a one-time action because all the matches will once again be held in a single nation (Germany for Euro 2024).
The UEFA Euros have been won by ten different nations. Spain and Germany have had the most success in the quadrennial competition, taking home three victories each. Spain won it in 1964, 2008, and 2012, while Germany won it in 1972, 1980, and 1996the most successful in the quadrennial competition, taking home three victories each. Spain won it in 1964, 2008, and 2012, while Germany won it in 1972, 1980, and 1996. Spain is the only team to have captured the title in back-to-back years.
