The well-read football enthusiast will be familiar with some (if not all) of the facts about Everton F.C., but the majority of Americans cannot make that claim.

Formerly St. Domingo’s FC

The parish of St. Domingo’s Methodist Church established a cricket team in the late 1800s for leisure purposes. However, a winter game may be added because cricket was typically played in the summer. As a result, St. Domingo’s F.C., a football team, was founded by Rev. Ben Swift Chambers.

People were eager to support or join the new squad in 1879 due to the sport’s widespread popularity.

Prince Rupert’s Tower

You can clearly see a tower in the background of the more recent versions of the Everton crest if you look closely. What is this building and how did it get there?

The building is Prince Rupert’s Tower, and it is situated in Liverpool’s Everton neighborhood. The tower, a recognizable structure in the center of the club’s stadium, was first included into the Everton crest by team secretary Theo Kelly in 1938.

Team Everton’s First Nickname

Many Evertonian affectionately refer to their team as the Toffees, but don’t you find the term a little strange given that Everton wears blue instead of brown when playing?

The nickname “Toffee” has been around virtually since the club was founded. Old Ma Bushell, who invented the Everton Toffee, ran a candy store called Ye Ancient Everton Toffee House. Fans bought a lot of these treats to enjoy while watching Everton play in its three former stadiums, Stanley Park, Priory Road, and eventually Anfield.

Origin of the Nickname “Goodison Park”

Goodison Park is also referred to by Evertonian as “The Grand Old Lady” despite being named for the road it was built upon, which was named after civil engineer George Goodison. The phrase was accidentally invented by journalist David Conn of The Independent in 1999. He bemoaned the fact that the “Grand Old Lady of English Football” was once again being passed up by a possible investor who could have helped the stadium reclaim its position as one of the best in England.
