The Leeds United team plays its home games at Elland Road Stadium and competes in the Premier League, the top tier of the English football league system.
The club has competed in the Premier League for fifteen years, spending more than fifty seasons in the top division. With the exception of three seasons spent in the third tier, the club has played its football in the top two divisions of English football since being admitted to the Football League in 1920. Leeds has won two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, two FA Charity/Community Shields, one League Cup, one FA Cup, and three English league championships.
Pre-Leeds United
Leeds City, the forerunner of Leeds United, was established in 1904 and admitted to the League in 1905. In the wake of Herbert Chapman’s entrance, they attracted larger numbers to Elland Road. This city is constructed to support top-flight football, Chapman said in 1914, but the Football League compelled Leeds City to disband and sell off all of their players in 1919 in reaction to claims that players had received unlawful payments during the First World War. Leeds United was established in 1919 at Salem Congregational Chapel in Leeds. [4] [5] On October 31, they were elected to the Midland League, filling the spot left vacant by Leeds City Reserves.
1920–1960
Leeds United was admitted to the Football League on May 31, 1920. They improved their standing in the Second Division during the ensuing years, eventually winning the title and moving up to the First Division in 1924. They were demoted in 1926–1927 because they were unable to establish themselves. Fairclough’s resignation following their relegation made room for Ray to take over as manager once more. Leeds was twice relegated in the years prior to the outbreak of World War II, but both times they were promoted back the following year.
Don Revie’s Reign, 1961–1974
After Jack Taylor’s resignation in March 1961, the club named former player Don Revie as manager. The team was “in financial crisis” when he took over, and in 1961–1962, only a victory in the final game of the season prevented the club from being demoted to Division Three.
