Narendra Modi Stadium: Introduction
The Narendra Modi Stadium, originally Motera Stadium, is a cricket venue located in Ahmedabad, India’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex. With a 132,000-seat capacity, it is the biggest stadium in the entire globe. a cricket stadium used for Test, ODI, T20I, and Indian Premier League matches that is operated by the Gujarat Cricket Association. The stadium was built in 1983 and underwent its initial renovation in 2006. It became the city’s go-to location for hosting international games. The stadium was closed and destroyed in 2015, and it will be entirely rebuilt by the end of 2020 at an anticipated cost of US$100 million or 800 crores.
Narendra Modi Stadium: History
The stadium, which was formerly known as the Gujarat Stadium, was given a new name in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the nation’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Prior to the construction of the Sardar Patel Stadium, the Navrangpura neighbourhood’s Sardar Patel Stadium, operated by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, hosted international cricket matches in the city. A new stadium was to be constructed on a 100-acre (400,000 m2) plot of land on the banks of the Sabarmati River that was granted by the Gujarati government in 1982. The Sardar Patel Stadium’s construction took nine months to complete. Since that time, this location has hosted all of the city’s international cricket matches. Sardar Patel Stadium hosted the opening ODI of the Australia-India series in 1984–1985 and saw Australia triumph against India.
Narendra Modi Stadium: Stadium design and facilities
The new stadium is located on 63 acres of land and has three entry points as opposed to the original stadium’s single entry point, one of which is connected to the metro. It has a 55-room clubhouse, an Olympic-sized pool, 76 corporate boxes that can accommodate 25 people each, and four dressing rooms. The stadium’s LED roof lights, which replace the typical floodlights at cricket grounds, are a special feature.
An antibacterial, fire-resistant canopy with PTFE membrane is installed with LED lighting, and it covers 30 meters (98 feet) of the 55 meters (180 feet) of sitting space. In order to make the roof more earthquake-resistant, Walter P Moore purposely built it to be lightweight and independent from the seating bowls. The design does away with the need for pillars and provides a clear view of the entire pitch for spectators from everywhere in the stadium.
