Before the start of the IPL 2025 season, Delhi Capitals (DC) made a big revelation by naming Faf du Plessis as vice-captain. This is only a week before the team’s season opener against Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on March 24 in Visakhapatnam. This move is meant to consolidate the leadership position of the team as DC begins a new chapter under Axar Patel’s captaincy.
Faf du Plessis Named Vice-Captain of DC

In a clip posted by Delhi Capitals on their official social media platforms, Faf du Plessis was seen showing excitement at assuming his new position as vice-captain of the team.
The 40-year-old South African player, who has had a glorious IPL career, especially playing as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), spoke in good terms about joining DC. “I am DC’s vice-captain, and I am looking ahead. Delhi has been wonderful, and the boys have been brilliant. Of course, I am delighted, and I am ready,” Du Plessis explained.
Du Plessis’ appointment is supported by his experience in leadership, which includes his three-year tenure as RCB’s captain. As captain, he led RCB to 21 victories out of 42 matches, with both seasons under his captaincy qualifying for the playoffs. His strategic and composed manner of playing the game makes him an important addition to Delhi Capitals as they seek to renew their leadership pool.
Axar Patel to Captain Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025

With Rishabh Pant’s departure, Axar Patel has been made the new captain of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025. Axar, an old hand in the franchise, was grateful for being offered the captaincy job.
“It is my absolute honor to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for having faith in me. I’ve grown as a cricketer and person in my time here at the Capitals, and I feel confident and prepared to take this side forward,” Axar said.
Axar briefly captained the team last season after taking the place of Rishabh Pant, who was suspended for one match for over-rate infringement. While his first experience as captain was a loss, Axar has improved as a leader since then and is now set to captain DC for a full season.
KL Rahul’s Lack of Participation in Leadership Position in IPL 2025
In a shocking turn of events, ex-Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul will not be playing a leadership role in IPL 2025. This is a big change for LSG, as they want to try out new leadership approaches this season. Rahul’s absence from the captaincy spot presents an interesting scenario, especially considering the rivalry between him and Rishabh Pant, as well as LSG’s high ambitions for the season.
Faf du Plessis to Have Vital Position in DC’s Leadership

As vice-captain, Faf du Plessis represents rich leadership experience and acumen to the Delhi Capitals. With a tremendous association that certainly boasts of important leadership roles in domestic and international cricket, Du Plessis would be a prime influencer to back Axar Patel right throughout the season.
His strategic brain and ability to make important decisions on the field will be key in DC’s quest for excellence across an extremely competitive IPL.
This IPL experience, especially the successful spell with RCB, allows him that sort of leadership experience which can stabilize the team and guide the youngsters well. Under Du Plessis, the side is looking for success in IPL 2025 with great expectations.
A New Leadership Era for Delhi Capitals
With Faf du Plessis as vice-captain and Axar Patel as captain, Delhi Capitals will bring a new leadership era to IPL 2025. With experienced leaders such as Du Plessis and Axar, the team will have the strategic depth and stability to play at the highest level.
The leadership of the duo will be crucial as DC seeks to do better than in past seasons and target a position in the playoffs. As the opening fixture against Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants approaches, fans can wait to experience how this new leadership dynamic translates to action on the field.
