Joao Cancelo has achieved something no footballer had managed before. After FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid CF 2-0 to secure the La Liga title, the Portuguese defender officially became the first player to win league trophies in four of Europe’s top five leagues.
It is the kind of record that shows just how successful Cancelo’s career has been over the years. No matter where he has played, trophies have followed. From Italy to England, Germany, and now Spain with FC Barcelona, the full-back has consistently been part of title-winning teams at the highest level.
His first major league success came with Juventus FC in Serie A during the 2018-19 season. Although he only spent one campaign in Turin, Cancelo quickly impressed with his energy, creativity, and attacking quality from defence. It did not take long for Europe’s biggest clubs to notice his talent.
That move eventually came when he joined Manchester City F.C.. Under manager Pep Guardiola, Cancelo developed into one of the most complete full-backs in world football. He became known for much more than defending, often drifting into midfield and helping control games with his passing and movement.
His time in England brought several Premier League titles and some of the best football of his career. Guardiola trusted him in different tactical roles, and Cancelo regularly delivered in big matches. During that period, he was widely viewed as one of the most influential defenders in Europe.

Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, And More
Cancelo later moved to FC Bayern Munich during the 2022-23 season and added a Bundesliga winners’ medal to his growing collection. Even though his stay in Germany was brief, he still became part of another championship-winning squad.
Now, he has added Spain to the list. FC Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over Real Madrid turned out to be the defining moment in the title race, giving the Catalan giants another La Liga crown and helping Cancelo make football history in the process.
What makes the achievement even more impressive is the level of competition in each league. Serie A, the Premier League, Bundesliga, and La Liga are all completely different environments, yet Cancelo found success in every one of them.
At 31, the Portuguese international continues to build one of the most unique careers in modern football. Very few players manage to win everywhere they go, but FC Barcelona’s Cancelo has turned it into a habit.
