Football pioneer Joan Gamper established the Football Club Barcelona (Barça) on November 29, 1899. Gamper selected the renowned blue and claret as the team colors since they represent the canton in Switzerland from which he is originally from. The legend started when players like Kubala, Suárez, Cruyff, Maradona, and Ronaldinho joined this club, among many others. “Barça” has come to symbolize Barcelona and the Catalan identity as a country over the 20th century. Because of this, it is said that “Barça” is more than just a club.

The new club got off to a good start; despite losing to Bizcaya in the first Copa del Rey final in 1902, Barcelona came back in fine form by taking the title eight times between that year and 1928.
