Copenhagen has taken a significant step towards securing a spot in the Champions League group stage by securing a 1-0 victory over Rakow Czestochowa in the initial leg of the playoffs.

Rakow, having previously overcome Qarabag FK and Aris Limassol in preceding rounds, held aspirations of making their debut in the Champions League group stage. However, entering the match on Tuesday, the Polish champions weren’t considered the favorites.

The deadlock was broken just a little over eight minutes into the game. A cross from Mohamed Elyounoussi deflected off Rakow defender Bogdan Racovitan, catching goalkeeper Adnan Kovacevic off-guard at his near post, according to Xinhua’s report.

Rakow attempted to retaliate shortly before halftime. Following a precise cross, Janis Papanikolau headed the ball into the net from close range, but the goal was subsequently disallowed after a VAR review revealed an offside position.

During the second half, the visitors focused on their defensive play, while Rakow sought opportunities to score. In the 66th minute, Sonny Kittel had a prime chance to level the score with a powerful volley, but his shot went off target. In the dying moments of the match, the visitors’ Polish goalkeeper, Kamil Grabara, displayed exceptional form by thwarting striker Lukasz Zwolinski’s attempt.

Grabara’s efforts ensured FC Copenhagen maintains a 1-0 lead as they head into the second leg, scheduled for August 30 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
