The FIA has confirmed a key adjustment in the Miami Grand Prix weekend, extending the only free practice session as teams prepare for a sprint-format event.

For the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, the sole practice session will now run for 90 minutes instead of the usual one hour. The session will take place from 12:00 to 13:30 local time.

This change comes as the Miami weekend is a sprint event, meaning there will be no FP2 or FP3 sessions. With limited track time already on the schedule, the FIA has opted to give teams more room to adapt.

Why FIA Made the Change

The FIA  said this decision is followed by a consultation with stakeholders and is linked to multiple factors, including the gap since the previous race, recent regulatory and technical updates for the 2026 rules cycle, and the reduced practice time inherent in sprint weekends.

In simple words, teams needed more running time to properly understand setup changes and get comfortable before qualifying and the race.

Along with the longer practice session, all track activity scheduled before FP1 will also move 30 minutes earlier than originally planned.

FP1 at the Miami International Autodrome will now begin at 17:00 UK time, aligning with the adjusted structure.

Sprint weekends are already high-pressure, with fewer sessions to fine-tune cars. This extension gives drivers and engineers a slightly bigger window to gather data, especially important with evolving technical regulations coming into play.
