The French news publication France Football presents the Ballon d’Or, an annual football prize. It is one of the oldest prizes and is regarded as the most important individual prize for football players around the globe. Spain Barcelona narrowly beat out their opponents to hold the record for most Ballon d’Or winners in history. They have six winners and have won a total of 12 trophies. The first one was won by the legendary Luis Suarez of Uruguay in 1960 after he assisted Barcelona in winning La Liga and outperformed everyone during the season. The following award was given to Bulgarian winger Hristo Stoichkov, who helped Barcelona win the league by scoring 24 goals two decades later. Rivaldo, one of Brazil’s two greatest legends, and the magician Ronaldinho won the following two trophies in 2005.

Surprisingly, the top of the list doesn’t include what is arguably the best football team in the world. Seven of their former players collectively managed to win 11 trophies, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival undoubtedly helped them move up to the second position on the list. Madrid players took home three of the first four Ballon d’Or awards, including two by legendary strikers and one each by midfielders Raymond Kopa and Alfredo Di Stefano. The following three Ballon d’Ors, however, were awarded in short succession and nearly four and a half decades later. In just six years, Figo, the Brazilian Ronaldo, and Cannavaro each won one prize.
