FIFA World Cup wished Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma a happy 38th birthday by comparing him to football legend Lionel Messi.
Rohit, who is the captain of India’s ODI and Test teams, turned 38 on Wednesday, April 30. His cricket journey has seen amazing successes and tough times, but it’s still one of the most inspiring stories in Indian cricket.
FIFA World Cup posted a picture on their Instagram showing India captain Rohit Sharma holding the T20 World Cup, in a scene similar to when Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi lifted the FIFA World Cup after beating Brazil in the final in Qatar.
Rohit Sharma began his journey in international cricket on June 23, 2007, and quickly impressed with his talent and adaptability, playing a key role in India’s T20 World Cup victory that same year. Over time, he has grown into one of the most fearless and dependable opening batters in world cricket.
He stepped into Test cricket in 2013 and has since built a solid career. In 67 Test matches across 116 innings, Rohit has scored 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57. His highest score is 212, and he has 12 centuries and 18 fifties to his name. He also leads India’s run tally in the ICC World Test Championship with 2,716 runs in 40 matches, which includes nine centuries and eight fifties.
In ODIs, Rohit ranks as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer of all time and is 10th overall in global rankings. As captain, he guided India to a Champions Trophy win in 2025 and took them to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup after an impressive 10-match winning run. Under his leadership, India has won 42 of the 56 ODIs he has captained, losing only 12.
Though he has retired from T20 internationals, Rohit ended on a high note by leading India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024. India went unbeaten in the tournament and beat South Africa in the final held in Barbados.
Currently playing in the 2025 IPL season, Rohit remains a vital figure in franchise cricket. He is widely regarded as one of the finest IPL captains, having led the Mumbai Indians to five championship wins – the joint-most in the league’s history.
