What is The Best FIFA Men’s Coach award?
The Best FIFA Football Coach award is given annually to men’s and women’s football coaches who are deemed to have performed the best in the previous 12 months. It is voted on by national team managers, national captains, a specialist journalist representing a national team, and FIFA.com fans who look at the achievements of each nominated coach from October 8, 2020, to August 7, 2021. The winner was announced on January 17th, 2022.
Winner 2021: Thomas Tuchel
Nation: Germany
Club(s): PSG | Chelsea
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was named ‘The Best’ FIFA Men’s Coach of 2021 at a ceremony in Zurich. Thomas Tuchel, who was appointed by Chelsea in January, quickly settled in and began his reign with a 14-game unbeaten streak, a record for the London club. In just half a season, the German won the Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City, while also leading the Blues to the FA Cup final and fourth place in the Premier League.
The German manager had a fantastic first year in charge of Blue, winning two trophies. Tuchel was named ‘The Best FIFA Men’s Coach of 2021’ at the award ceremony, which was broadcast live on FIFA’s YouTube channel. He defeated Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Italy coach Roberto Mancini, while Antonio Conte, Hansi Flick, Lionel Sebastian Scaloni, and Diego Simeone failed to make the top three.
Thomas Tuchel won the UEFA Champions League, defeating Manchester City in the final in 2020-21. He also led the club to the FA Cup final and fourth place in the league, ensuring Champions League qualification even if they did not qualify automatically as holders.
What did he Accomplish?
Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked by PSG on Christmas Eve, stormed back into the dugout a month later with an out-of-sorts Chelsea team that was ninth in the table. While the decision to fire club legend Frank Lampard seemed harsh at the time, it proved to be a masterstroke as Tuchel thoroughly justified his mid-season appointment: in the space of four months, he transformed Chelsea into European champions – outwitting Pep Guardiola – sealed a top-four finish, and nearly won an FA Cup. His shift to three at the back was a tactical masterstroke.
Are there any Disappointments?
The only real disappointments of an incredible four months were losing the FA Cup final to Leicester City and a 5-2 home defeat to West Brom.
Thomas Tuchel on Winning the Award: “I feel like I can be the best version of myself at Chelsea, that I’m trusted and supported, and you can never, ever underestimate that. I feel happy, and I take the Best FIFA Men’s Coach award on behalf of everybody who supports me and has supported me. I promise I will not stop working hard, staying humble, and always knowing that it’s a team effort.”
