FIFA, the international governing body of football, has dealt a bitter blow to Pakistan’s hopes. FIFA suspends the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF). The suspension follows the failure of the PFF to tackle the urgent amendments to its constitution, which were recommended by FIFA and the AFC so that fair and democratic elections could be conducted in the body.
Consequently, the suspension has put on hold Pakistan’s participation in international football and has barred it from engaging in any continental or global footballing activity.
The Reason Behind FIFA’s Suspension

This decision arose from FIFA’s realization that the Pakistan Football Federation did not want to reform its Constitution. Changes to this Constitution were to ensure that fair, free, and democratic elections for the leadership of the Pakistan Football Federation were held.
It is also an ongoing process to put more transparency and integrity into football administration in Pakistan. FIFA expressed its displeasure over the PFF’s failure to meet any required reforms and obligations that saw its activities suspended on the international level.
As reported by FIFA on Thursday, the PFF was suspended on account of the fact that it had never submitted the edition of its constitution which could ensure genuine, democratic elections.
FIFA also explained that the suspension would be lifted only if the PFF Congress approved the amended constitution which was sent to them by FIFA and the AFC. This amendment is considered crucial in assuring transparency and keeping off political interference in the federation’s affairs.
PFF’s Internal Struggles and Government Neglect

This suspension points to the infighting in the Federation that has continued apparently without a serious round of governmental action. Political appointments have long had questions raised in their direction, with FIFA citing their interference in proper conduct within the Association. FIFA wanted these amendments to eliminate political influences and ensure fair elections in the selection of Executive Committee members.
PFF Normalisation Committee’s chairman, Haroon Malik, who is appointed by FIFA itself, had already warned that suspension could occur. He presented his case in front of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination, urging them to act immediately. Indecision on the part of the committee has thus allowed suspension by FIFA when Congress refused to accept the proposed amendments in the Constitution.
FIFA’s Statement and the Road to Resolution

The official statement from FIFA underlined that the suspension will not be lifted before the PFF Congress approves the constitutional changes recommended by FIFA and AFC. This suspension will hit Pakistan particularly hard in its aspirations to participate in international football events. FIFA’s decision is a loud signal for the PFF to reform its governance system and democratize its election process based on international standards.
Proposed amendments by FIFA mainly focus on eligibility and candidatures of the president of the PFF. It has long been criticized for political maneuvering surrounding the presidency, and FIFA aims to bring more clarity and fairness to the election process. A deadline was set for February 15 for the PFF to adopt constitutional amendments and get the presidential elections going. However, with the PFF Congress rejecting the amendments, the whole process remains stalled.
Pakistan Suspensions Historic Context

This is a reminder that FIFA has suspended Pakistan before. This is actually the third time PFF has faced suspension since 2015 arising from issues relating to fair elections to the presidency. Repeated warnings and attempts at normalizing the issue have resulted in the repeated suspensions of the PFF, and the failure to introduce democratic reforms is the main reason behind it.
It goes without saying that the continuous disturbances within the PFF highlight the necessity for structural changes within the governance of football in Pakistan. The application of these changes will decidedly ensure that all prospects of Pakistan’s football do not remain in limbo and help Pakistan not miss the occasion to develop the pool of talent in the country and compete on the international stage.
