Here are 9 records to watch for as the FIFA World Cup gets underway in November and Qatar has the potential to break many of them.

The FIFA World Cup is almost here, and on November 21st, 32 nations will compete for the most desired trophy in all of sports with all eyes on Qatar. There will be performances by prominent athletes like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and even our own Christian Pulisic.

In terms of appearances, Lionel Messi might surpass the competition’s mark.

Unlike any other active player, Lionel Messi has participated in 19 World Cup games over the course of his career. Lothar Matthäus of Germany holds the record for playing in the most World Cup games, with 25. If Argentina advances to the championship game and Messi participates in all seven games, he will surpass Matthäus’ record.

The most knockout phase assists is also a record.

Messi and Pelé share the World Cup record for most assists in knockout games with four, so he just needs one more to surpass the legendary Brazilian.

Cristiano Ronaldo might make history by scoring in five World Cups.

Ronaldo, who scored in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 at four different World Cups, is one of only three players in history to accomplish this feat.

German legends Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose round out the top three.

If Ronaldo scores in Qatar, he will become the first player to ever score at five World Cups. Ronaldo is now being sued by Manchester United over remarks he made about the club in a new interview with Piers Morgan.

Neymar might overtake Pelé as the top scorer in Brazil history.

Neymar presently leads Brazil with 75 goals, which means he needs just three more to break Pelé’s record of 77 goals, held since 1971.

While Harry Kane might surpass all previous scorers for England.

Kane needs three more goals to surpass Wayne Rooney’s record and surpass him as England’s all-time leading scorer. In 75 matches for the Three Lions, the striker for Tottenham Hotspur has 51 goals. Rooney retired from international soccer in 2018 after making 120 appearances and scoring 53 goals.

Argentina has the ability to surpass the previous mark for most international games played without a loss.

The last time Argentina lost was against Brazil in July 2019. Argentina hasn’t dropped a game in 35 games. Lionel Scaloni’s team needs just one win in Qatar’s group stage to break Italy’s record of 37 games without a loss in men’s international competition.

Thomas Müller of Germany has the potential to set a new record for World Cup goals scored.

Miroslav Klose of Germany holds the record for most goals scored at a World Cup with 16.
Müller comes the closest to his record among active players with 10. The Bayern Munich attacker will break his fellow countryman’s record if he scores seven goals in Qatar.

While Manuel Neuer, a teammate, has a chance to surpass the tournament record for clean sheets.

With 10 clean sheets each, Frenchman Fabien Barthez and English great Peter Shilton hold the record for the cleanest sheets in FIFA World Cup history. If Germany’s Neuer can defeat his opponents in four of his team’s games in Qatar, he will surpass them.

However, not every record that is up for grabs is desired.

With 21 each, Italy and England presently hold the regrettable record for the most World Cup draws. Italy would be the lone holder of the record with just one draw against England in the Middle East because it did not qualify for Qatar. With 27 losses, Mexico now holds the record for most World Cup defeats. Unless El Tri triumph in the competition, that number will only rise.
