Team of Portugal for the FIFA World Cup

The Portugal National Football team has represented Portugal in the international men’s football competition since the year of 1921. However, the team often known as “A Seleção” (The Selection), and “Os Navegadores” (The Navigators) is generated by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

They are also referred to as the “Seleção das Quinas”, due to a synecdoche based on the flag of the country. The team is right now led by their head coach, Fernando Santos and their captain is Cristiano Ronaldo, who is said to hold the team record for most caps and most goals.

According to reports, their debut in a major tournament final was during the 1928 Olympics, where they successfully reached the quarterfinals. Later the team also made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro in 1984. However, they are said to qualify for their first World Cup in 1966.

During the 1990s, the team began consistently featuring in the European Championship and World Cup. Later, they managed to reach the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup, finishing in fourth place, along with placing as runners-up at Euro 2004 as hosts, as well as reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2000 and Euro 2012.

During the Euro 2016, Portugal successfully achieved its first ever major trophy by defeating France in the finals. With this achievement, Portugal qualified and made its only appearance in the FIFA Confederations Cup held in Russia, where they finished in third place. However, the team qualified for and hosted the brand-new 2018–19 Nations League finals where they defeated the Netherlands and bagged the second major tournament victory in three finals.

Furthermore, the team also featured in the Olympic football tournament, and successfully registered their names in the semi-finals of the 1996 Summer Olympic, finishing in fourth place.

As per reports, the presence of their captain, Cristiano Ronaldo who is arguably the best player to ever play football has always been the highlight of this team. Along with Cristiano, the Portugal football team comprising a bunch of players certainly seems to be the future of the Seleção das Quinas. With plenty of stunning players by their side, they are expected to come up with their incredible performance in this edition of FIFA World Cup.
