Bale and the Dragons are excited to return to a major stage in the FIFA World Cup. Even the most upbeat Wales football supporter must have wondered if their team was cursed during significant qualification campaigns after a string of narrow misses and embarrassing lows. But under the leadership of Chris Coleman, and now Robert Page, anxiety and pessimism have been replaced with assurance and optimism.
Following their participation in two consecutive UEFA EUROs, Page’s team performed admirably throughout the qualification process for Qatar 2022, ending their 64-year absence from the FIFA World Cup with a calm 1-0 playoff victory over Ukraine in Cardiff. With that Gareth Bale-inspired triumph, the demons of Scotland in 1977 and 1985, Gheorghe Hagi in 1993, and Novi Sad’s low point ten years ago were cast out.
Strategy and Tactics
The erudite Page insists that “trying to be a good bloke” is the reason for his relative success with a Wales team that combines A-list athletes with Championship footballers. You will get the most out of the players if you follow his advice and show them respect, Page said. Wales issued 41 caps to Page, a former centre-half for Watford and Sheffield United. After managing Port Vale and Northampton Town, he was named manager of his nation’s U-21 team in March 2017.
Page, who also managed Wales’ U-17 and U-19 teams, developed close bonds with players he will need in Qatar, including Joe Rodon, the Tottenham defender on loan at Rennes, Joe Morrell of Portsmouth, and Daniel James of Fulham. In November 2020, Page took over as Ryan Giggs’ replacement, initially on an interim basis. In order to defeat Czech Republic in a crucial World Cup qualifying match, he used three central defenders as well as wingbacks.
Key Player: Gareth Bale
Despite being 34 years old, Wales’ team still looks to Bale as its talisman. If you take him out of Page’s team, you’re left with a serviceable starting line-up that could hold its own against most foes but may lack match-winning players.
Bale raises Wales. He offers an X-factor as well as a fear factor. The player has a history of infrequent club appearances, and since joining Los Angeles FC from Real Madrid in the summer, his usage there has been minimal. However, the attacker may have pulled off a brilliant move by securing sporadic playing time in the United States before Qatar 2022.
While numerous athletes compete in rounds of fiercely competitive domestic and European matches in preparation for Qatar 2022, Bale already has more experience.
Observe: Brennan Johnson
The biggest accomplishment of all of Nottingham Forest’s Premier League comeback signings may have been persuading Johnson to sign a four-year contract at the City Ground.
The 21-year-old flyer, who was the Championship player of the season the previous year, capped off a personally amazing campaign by helping Wales defeat Ukraine to advance to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Johnson is a good fit for Page, who prefers quick-footed wide players to balance out Moore’s height and strength in the centre.
Johnson has been with his club since the age of eight and has a sharp football mind. His father David was a very good forward for Forest and Ipswich Town. He comes from a family of athletes.
World Cup Record for Wales
In Qatar, Wales will take part in its second-ever World Cup competition. In 1958, they played three draws in a row in Sweden before defeating Hungary in a sudden-death shootout to advance to the round of eight. Brazil eventually won the match after Pele’s lone goal in the quarterfinal at Gothenburg. Wales came very close to qualifying for the competition at least four times in the interim years, but they had to wait until 2022 to finally make it, defeating Ukraine in Cardiff to secure a spot in Qatar.
