The “Golden Glove Award” is handed to the most outstanding goalkeeper at each FIFA World Cup final. Since the inaugural World Cup in 1930, the best goalie has been recognized with an award. In 1994, the Lev Yashin Award was created to identify the best goalkeeper at the World Cup. The award was named after Lev Yashin, a famous Russian goalie who died young. This award for the best goalkeeper got a new name in 2010. It is now called the “Golden Glove Award.”
The FIFA Technical Study Group decides who gets the award. The Golden Ball Award is also open to goalkeepers; in 2002, the German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn won both. Until 1990, the tournament’s All-Star Team only selected one goalie for the team; hence, that player’s name appears on the list of the tournament’s top goalkeepers below.
The Golden Glove Award Voting Process
The FIFA Technical Study Group is responsible for casting votes for the Golden Glove Award. The award’s winner is determined by tallying up the votes cast by the jury members to decide who they thought performed the role of goalkeeper at the competition the best. The competition will determine only one victor; thus, tiebreakers will be used if two or more players have an equal number of votes.
Suppose there is still a tie after taking those two considerations into account. In that case, the player who participated in the total minutes of play throughout the tournament will be the one to take home the award. If there is still a tie after these two factors have been applied, the competitor with the highest competition advancement will be declared the winner.
