FIFA World Cup Records and Statistics: Hosts Who Were Runner Ups in the Final Match

The FIFA World Cup is the best tournament for men’s international football. It has teams from all over the world. Most people agree that football is the most popular sport in the world, so the FIFA World Cup, which happens every four years, always draws a huge crowd.

FIFA, the world’s governing body for football, was founded in 1904. FIFA made sure football was included in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp. So, the stage was set for the first FIFA World Cup, which took place in 1930. Uruguay was chosen as the host country because it won the Olympics in 1924 and 1928 and because they were celebrating 100 years of independence.

Uruguay won the first FIFA World Cup by beating Argentina (4-2) in the final. They brought the trophy back to their home country to show it off. The only countries that didn’t win the World Cup when they were the hosts were Brazil and Sweden. In 1950, Brazil came in second, and in 1958, Sweden made it to the next round.

Here is the runner-up team who host the game but lost the game:

Brazil (1950)

Host: Brazil

Winner: Uruguay

It was expected that the hosts would be the ones to hoist the trophy in front of their own fans, but destiny had other plans. The “Tragedy at the Maracana,” in which Brazil lost the championship game to Uruguay, caused a young nation to enter a state of national mourning. Uruguay overcame all odds to pull off an upset victory over the overconfident Brazilians.

The tournament in 1950 did not feature a “true” final; instead, Uruguay and Brazil played each other in the final round-robin match between the competition’s best teams from each group.

The Brazilian supporters’ experiences at the World Cup in 1950 left a sour taste in their mouths. Nobody predicted the away team would pull off the surprise in the deciding game. Moacir Barbosa, the Brazilian goalie who became a scapegoat after enabling Juan Schiaffino and Ghiggia to score goals, had to carry the burden throughout his life and was even regarded as a jinx in his country for the remainder of his life. This was because he had allowed the goals.

Sweden (1958)

Host: Sweden

Winner: Brazil

Despite Sweden’s unexpected run to 1958 final, the competition was dominated by one player: the Brazilian teenager Pelé. 1958 was the year that Brazil, which had such bad luck in 1950, finally won the world championship they had been so close to winning for such a long time. Sweden, hosting the event, advanced to the championship game by advancing through the semi-finals and defeating the defending champions, West Germany. However, they were defeated by the Brazilian boys in the championship game, with Pele and Vava scoring two goals apiece in a 5-2 blowout victory.

The Brazilians, and in particular their young prodigy Pele, who was writing the first of many glorious chapters in World Cup history, was applauded by the crowd in Sweden when the match was over, and the crowd rose to their feet to do so.
