With just a week remaining for the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi, anticipation and excitement among hockey enthusiasts are reaching new heights. The focus is on the Indian women’s team, determined to secure a top-three position to earn a coveted berth for the Paris Olympic Games 2024.
The tournament features a formidable lineup, with World No. 5 Germany, former Asian Games Champions Japan, Chile, and the Czech Republic grouped in Pool A. The hosts, India, find themselves in Pool B alongside the United States, New Zealand, and Italy.
The Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf in Ranchi is buzzing with activities as participating teams arrive in the city and test their skills on the same ground that recently hosted the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, where the Indian team led by Savita clinched top honors.
Buoyed by their success in the Asian Champions Trophy, the Indian team is poised to give their all in the upcoming do-or-die tournament. Captain Savita expressed the team’s motivation, stating, “This is a do-or-die outing for us, and we are ready for the challenge.” The team, consisting of experienced players who understand the intensity of Olympic Qualifiers, is eager to make their mark.
Vice-captain Nikki Pradhan, hailing from Jharkhand, shared the collective dream of participating in the Olympic Games. “There is a lot of excitement not just among the team members but among the hockey fans in Jharkhand who I am sure will turn up in large numbers to show their support for us,” she added.
The Indian team’s journey begins with a match against the United States on January 13, followed by a clash with New Zealand on January 14. After a day of rest, India will face Italy on January 16. The semi-finals are scheduled for January 18, with the final set to take place on January 19.
The stakes are high, as the top three teams from the tournament will secure their ticket to the Paris Olympic Games. The Indian women’s hockey team is determined to make a mark and fulfill their Olympic dream.
