The tournament occurs every four years, coinciding with the four-year gap between Summer Olympics. Pakistan has the title of the most successful team with four wins.

At the same time, the Netherlands and Australia have won three championships, Germany with two titles, and Belgium and India both have one win. The 2018 tournament was hosted in Bhubaneswar, India, and Belgium emerged victorious, winning their first World Cup title by defeating the Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out 3-2 after the match ended in a 0-0 draw. As a result, the tournament expanded to include 16 teams in 2018.
