First Home Defeat for Arsenal as West Ham Secures Win

2 Min Read

West Ham United dealt a significant blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations by securing a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium, denying the Gunners a return to the top of the table. Arsenal, who were leading at Christmas, now find themselves two points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, while West Ham climbs to sixth place, just four points away from the top four.

Despite Arsenal’s early dominance and pressure, West Ham took the lead against the run of play on the 13th-minute mark. The momentum shifted for West Ham just after the half-hour when playmaker Lucas Paqueta, initially appearing injured during the warm-up, was substituted for Said Benrahma.

Arsenal came close to equalizing five minutes before halftime when Bukayo Saka’s shot struck the post and was cleared by West Ham’s defense. Declan Rice’s long-range attempt narrowly missed the crossbar in the early second half. However, former Arsenal defender Mavropanos extended West Ham’s lead, rising above Gabriel to power in a header from a James Ward-Prowse corner.

Despite Gabriel Jesus having opportunities with headers, West Ham maintained control, with Benrahma missing a chance to make it 3-0 from the penalty spot in stoppage time. The penalty was awarded for a foul by Rice on Emerson Palmieri, but David Raya saved Benrahma’s effort.

Arsenal faces a setback with their first home defeat of the season, while West Ham celebrates a noteworthy victory that strengthens their position in the league.
