In the summer of 1930, the inaugural World Cup tournament for football, the most popular sport in the world, was held. Peru and Romania competed in a frantic match in Uruguay in July of that same year. At the 38-minute mark, Mario de las Casas of Peru was struck by a Romanian defender by the name of Steiner.
Left-back The Universitario de Deportes was founded in 1924 by Mario de las Casas, Plácido Galindo and Eduardo Astengo. One of Lima’s two top football teams, La U is a fierce rival of Alianza Lima and is frequently referred to as La U.
Due to the lack of substitutes, Romania was reduced to 10 players as a result of the accident. According to the memory of Peruvian squad member Luis de Souza Ferreyra, despite being an accident, the Romanians were not pleased, tension was high, and the game was constantly on the point of devolving into a full-blown brawl.
He believed that the Romanians were aiming to level the playing field by either hurting or inciting the Peruvians to retaliate by sending someone to the stands. But it wasn’t until minute 56 that they were successful. Mario de las Casas overstepped the mark in a match characterized by brawls, and in a time before red and yellow cards, the referee merely told him to leave the field.
A portent of things to come was Romania’s 3-1 victory in the final score. It seems improbable that any of them will ever receive a World Cup game-ending red card again because of the efforts of today’s Peruvian national squad.
Placido Reynaldo Galindo Pando
The first player to be dismissed from a World Cup Finals was Plácido Reynaldo Galindo Pando (9 March 1906 – 22 October 1988), a midfielder for the Peruvian national team in the 1930 FIFA World Cup. He served as the president, manager, and player for Universitario de Deportes.
Galindo was added to the Peruvian roster for the 1930 FIFA World Cup by national football team coach Francisco Bru. Galindo competed in the 1929 South American Championship as well.
14 July 1930, Romania 3, Peru 1, Estadio Pocitos, Montevideo (300).
Plácido Galindo of Peru became the first player to receive a World Cup game dismissal. Peru tied the score with 15 minutes left, but Romania took advantage of their numerical advantage by scoring twice in the dying seconds. Romania grabbed the lead in the first minute thanks to Deşu. The lowest-ever attendance for a World Cup match, despite the official attendance being reported as 2,459, was likely closer to 300.
