The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is one of the most popular sports events in the world of cricket.
Started in 2023, the tournament has turned itself into the world’s premier franchise-based T20 cricket league in a short span of time.
Staged close on the lines of men’s Indian Premier League (IPL), the Women’s Premier League has given stage for several women cricketers to showcase their cricketing skills.
Mumbai Indians (MI), led by Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, won the inaugural WPL title in 2023 after beating Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals (DC) by seven wickets in the final played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
The second edition was won by Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) beating Delhi Capitals (DC) by eight wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Before the inception of the WPL, the Women’s T20 Challenge was held from 2018 to 2022 and was the top-tier domestic women’s T20 competition in India.
Four seasons of the Women’s T20 Challenge were staged before it finally made way to the Women’s Premier League with the 2021 season being cancelled due to COVID-19.
IPL Supernovas won the title thrice – in 2018, 2019 and 2022 – while the IPL Trailblazers emerged as the champions in 2020.
