Before the inception of the WPL, the Women’s T20 Challenge was held from 2018 to 2022 and was the top-tier domestic women’s T20 competition in India.

Four seasons of the Women’s T20 Challenge were staged before it finally made way to the Women’s Premier League with the 2021 season being cancelled due to COVID-19.

IPL Supernovas won the title thrice – in 2018, 2019 and 2022 – while the IPL Trailblazers emerged as the champions in 2020.
