Some football managers don’t fail because they’re not good enough, they fail because the situation just doesn’t suit them. At the top level, everything is magnified, pressure, expectations, dressing room politics, and even small issues can spiral quickly. What’s interesting is how some of these same coaches go elsewhere and suddenly look like completely different managers.

Which football managers failed at big clubs but succeeded elsewhere?

Unai Emery, Success: Sevilla, Villarreal

Emery never quite settled at Arsenal. There were moments, like reaching the Europa League final, but overall the team felt inconsistent and unsure of its identity. Once he left, though, he went back to what he does best. At Sevilla FC, he built a reputation as a Europa League specialist, and later with Villarreal CF, he delivered a historic European trophy. In the right setup, his attention to detail and game planning really stand out.

Ronald Koeman, Success: Southampton, Netherlands national team

Koeman’s spell at FC Barcelona was always going to be difficult given the financial mess and squad issues, but even then, performances didn’t fully convince. Compare that to his time at Southampton FC, where he had them playing organized, competitive football in the Premier League. He also did a solid job rebuilding the Netherlands national football team, giving them structure again and making them relevant on the international football stage.

Frank de Boer, Success: Ajax

Things went downhill quickly for De Boer at Inter Milan, and his time at Crystal Palace barely even got going. But before that, he had already proven himself at AFC Ajax. Winning four straight league titles there isn’t a fluke. In a system built around youth and control, he looked confident and clear in his approach, something that just didn’t translate elsewhere.

Frank Lampard, Success: Coventry City

Lampard’s time at Chelsea FC, especially during his second spell, didn’t really work out. Results were poor and the team never looked settled. It left a lot of people doubting whether he was ready for top level management. But he has responded well with Coventry City FC, guiding them to promotion and earning a place in the Premier League next season. It feels like a reset moment in his managerial journey.

Football often comes down to context. The same manager can look completely different depending on the club, the players, and the pressure around them. Sometimes it’s not about ability at all, it’s just about being in the right place at the right time.
