Formula 1 CEO Makes Big Call Amid Max Verstappen’s Retirement Speculation

4 Min Read

Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has responded firmly to recent comments from four-time world champion Max Verstappen that triggered speculation about a possible early retirement.

Verstappen recently suggested that the sweeping 2026 regulation changes could influence how long he continues in the sport. His remarks, made during an episode of the “Up to Speed” podcast, quickly caught attention across the Formula 1 paddock.

Speaking during pre-season testing in Bahrain, Stefano Domenicali revealed that he met Verstappen to discuss the matter and described the conversation as constructive. He stressed that the Dutch driver remains deeply committed to Formula 1 and cares strongly about its future.

According to Domenicali, Verstappen’s direct style of expressing his views can sometimes be misinterpreted, but there is no reason to doubt his dedication to the sport.

Concerns Over 2026 Regulation Changes

In 2026, there will be a significant number of technical changes to the cars that we use in Formula One, mainly due to the introduction of more electrical power in the power units.

Verstappen stated on more than one occasion that he does not see much difference in the cars they will be using next year compared to the ones in Formula E, meaning that the electrical components may change the way these cars are driven.

According to Verstappen, the new regulations do not “benefit the length” of time he has to drive in Formula 1; therefore, he has indicated that there is a possibility that he will leave Formula 1 before his contract expires.

Max Verstappen’s Career and Future Plans

At just 17 years of age, Verstappen made his first appearance in F1 racing in 2015, making him the youngest driver ever at that time. For an entire decade, Verstappen has achieved dominance within the world of modern Formula 1.

During this, the 28-year-old driver approaches his 200th Grand Prix start as if it were an indication that he is closer to his retirement than when he started to compete in Formula 1. He also showed interest in options to continue his career beyond traditional Formula 1 motorsport, including last year’s endurance sports car racing in Germany.

Verstappen has indicated that he is prepared to move on from Formula 1 and continue to pursue other projects and goals he has outside of F 1.

Formula 1’s Long-Term Vision

Despite Verstappen’s reservations, Domenicali underlined that the new regulations are designed to secure the sport’s long-term sustainability and relevance. The leadership believes the changes are necessary to modernize the sport while maintaining its competitive appeal.

Domenicali also made it clear that drivers’ feedback remains important in shaping the future direction of Formula 1.

For now, there is no official indication that Max Verstappen plans to retire soon.
