Formula 1 Welcomes Cadillac As New Team

Formula 1 gets a new member with the entry of Cadillac. 

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Formula 1 confirmed Cadillac F1 as the newest team that will contest in the Formula One World Championship.

The new American team is backed by TWG Motorsports and General Motors (GM) with Towriss and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter as the owners. 

Cadillac is set to hit the Formula 1 track in 2026.

To bring this into reality, several appointments were confirmed across the board in recent months. Former Marussia Sporting Director Graeme Lowdon joined as Team Principal and Russ O’Blenes was confirmed as the CEO of TWG GM Performance Power Units.

“The FIA and Formula One can confirm that, following the completion of their respective sporting, technical and commercial assessments, the application by General Motors and TWG Motorsports to bring a Cadillac team to the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2026 has been approved,” read the Formula One statement.

With the addition of an 11th team, the Formula One grid has expanded from 20 to 22 cars.

The FIA Formula One Championship’s expansion to an 11th team in 2026 is a milestone. GM/Cadillac brings fresh energy, aligning with the new FIA 2026 regulations and ushering in an exciting era for the sport.

“The Cadillac Formula One Team’s presence in the paddock will inspire future competitors and fans. Their entry strengthens our mission to push motorsport’s boundaries at the highest level,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

The new entrant have established their Formula One facility just outside the gates of Silverstone, the home of British racing. They are now  working to build their main headquarters in Fishers in the American motorsport hub Indianapolis.

General Motors and TWG Motorsports are also setting up a power unit facility near General Motors’ technical centre in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they will develop their engine. 

Meanwhile, the American team have struck a deal with Ferrari to use their power units and gearboxes from next season.

Who is Mark Walter? 

A highly successful businessman,  Walter is the chief executive officer of Guggenheim Partners, a privately held global financial services firm with more than $325 billion in assets under management. According to Forbes, Walter has a net worth of $6.1 Billion.
