Formula E has taken a serious step forward with the official reveal of its Gen4 race car, and this is not just another upgrade. It is a clear push to close the gap with the very top of motorsport.
Set to debut in the 2026/27 season under a new regulatory cycle, the Gen4 car is being positioned as the fastest and most powerful machine in the championship’s history.
Fastest & Most Powerful Formula E Race Car
The Gen4 car is expected to cross 335 km/h and hit 0-100 km/h in around 1.8 seconds. That puts it ahead of current Formula 2 machinery and within touching distance of Formula One pace.
Power has also taken a massive jump. Compared to the current Gen3 Evo, output is up by 70 per cent, with the car capable of delivering 600 kW in attack mode and during qualifying duels. That’s a serious leap for an all-electric series that, not long ago, was still proving its place in elite racing.
Gen4 is officially the biggest, longest and most powerful car Formula E has built so far. But beyond the specs, it’s the intent behind it that stands out.
Formula E CEO on New Gen-4 Car
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds didn’t hold back while describing what this launch represents.
He said, “GEN4 isn’t just a car, it’s a bold declaration of our ambition. Seeing what it can do on track for the first time is a real milestone for Formula E – we are now delivering performance levels that were thought impossible for electric vehicles just five years ago.”
He continued saying, “The step up in performance is immediately clear, from the speed and power to the way it delivers on track, and there was a genuine buzz among everyone who witnessed it.
“This is a hugely exciting moment for the championship as we head into the upcoming 2026/27 Season, and a clear signal of where we are headed. This is just the beginning, as its refinement is now in the hands of our manufacturers – Porsche, Jaguar, Stellantis, Nissan, Lola Cars and Mahindra – to push development to even higher limits of performance ahead of its racing debut later this year.”
“Gen4 isn’t just an evolution, it’s a step-change in innovation and performance that will redefine motorsport for years to come.”
The next phase now shifts to development, with major manufacturers like Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis, Mahindra, and Lola Cars all involved.
Their role will be key in extracting maximum performance before the car hits the track competitively.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem on Gen4
Mohammed Ben Sulayem believes Gen4 represents a turning point. He said, “The new GEN4 Formula E car marks a significant step forward for electric racing, setting a new global benchmark for performance, innovation, and sustainability.”
He also said, “It is not simply just a fast car; it is a statement of intent about the future of this technology. I am proud that the FIA and its partners in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship are leading this vision. Collaboration has been central to the development of this car, and it will continue to be at the heart of a new era for the championship defined by greater performance, road relevance, and excitement. We are redefining what is possible alongside some of the world’s biggest automotive manufacturers using the laboratory of motorsport.”
For years, Formula E has been about potential. With Gen4, it’s now about performance.
