After Team India’s impressive 2-0 Test series win against the West Indies, head coach Gautam Gambhir faced the first question on everyone’s mind: what lies ahead for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket? Even though the press conference was mainly about the Test series, Gambhir didn’t shy away from addressing their future. Known for speaking his mind, he shared his thoughts clearly.
Focus on the Present, Says Gautam Gambhir
Gautam backed the stance of BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar, pointing out that the 2027 ODI World Cup is still a couple of years away. He emphasized that the team needs to concentrate on the immediate challenge: India’s upcoming tour of Australia.
“ODI World Cup is two and a half years away. It is important to stay in the present. They are both quality players. Hopefully, those 2 will have a successful tour,” Gambhir said.
Currently, ODIs are the only international format that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are playing. How they perform and maintain their fitness will decide if they fit into India’s long-term plans for the 50-over World Cup. By then, Rohit will be 40, and Kohli will be 38. Rohit has also recently handed over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Shine in Champions Trophy
The last time Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma represented India in ODIs was during the Champions Trophy earlier this year, which India won. Rohit Sharma was named Player of the Match in the final, while Virat Kohli consistently ranked among the top five batters, often guiding India to victory throughout the tournament.
Shubman Gill Set to Lead India in 2027 ODI World Cup
Since the selection of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the Australia tour, fans, former players, and cricket analysts have been debating their ODI future. With Shubman Gill now named captain, the BCCI’s direction seems clear. The management views Gill as the ideal candidate to lead the team in the 2027 World Cup, even though Rohit Sharma’s contributions have been exceptional.
