GG vs DC: Delhi Capitals Cruise Into WPL Final With Dominant Eliminator Win

4 Min Read

Delhi Capitals put up a dominating display to thrash Gujarat Giants in the GG vs DC Eliminator, securing a convincing seven-wicket win and advancing to their fourth successive Women’s Premier League final. While chasing a target of 169, DC easily overcame the target in just 15.4 overs, thus also exacting revenge for their previous defeats at the hands of the Gujarat Giants this season.

DC Bowlers Set the Tone After Winning the Toss

Despite the Gujarat Giants performing well while batting first all season, DC captain Jemimah Rodrigues decided to put the Gujarat Giants into bat on a tough Kotambi surface.

This move proved fruitful for the DC as the Delhi bowlers put pressure on the Gujarat Giants, restricting them from scoring freely despite a good powerplay. The Gujarat Giants scored 48 runs in the power play but lost three crucial wickets, putting them on the back foot in the GG vs DC match.

Early Breakthroughs Leave Giants Reeling

The first breakthrough came with a movement to get Sophie Devine back in the pavilion. However, Beth Mooney and Anushka Sharma tried to rebuild, but DC’s disciplined bowling ensured that momentum did not shift.

Nandni Sharma’s double strike further affected Giants’ chances, getting Anushka and Ashleigh Gardner back in the pavilion. By the 11th over, Gujarat were struggling at 71 for 4, having gone 33 balls without a boundary.

Mooney and Wareham Rescue Gujarat Giants

As wickets fell around her, Beth Mooney stabilized the innings, while Georgia Wareham brought some urgency with her aggressive stroke play. Wareham went after several bowlers, sweeping, cutting, and hitting her way to crucial boundaries.

A double-wicket over from Henry momentarily put Gujarat’s late charge in jeopardy, but Mooney dominated the death overs. Her three boundaries in the penultimate over pushed Giants to 168/7, their lowest score against DC this season in the GG vs DC series.

Explosive Opening Stand Puts DC in Command

Delhi Capitals did not waste any time in taking control of the match. Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma went on to launch a fierce attack despite the unpredictable bounce.

Shafali tore apart Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Sophie Devine one after the other, while Lee smashed Renuka Thakur and Gayakwad to put the pressure on. A deadly 20-ball stint fetched 62 runs, sealing the match early on in the GG vs DC Eliminator.

Brief Wobble Fails to Halt DC Momentum

A double strike by Georgia Wareham momentarily lifted Gujarat’s hopes, removing Lee and Shafali in the same over. But with the required rate already in check, the loss had little effect. DC’s middle order remained unperturbed under pressure, ensuring the Giants never managed to get back into the match.

Rodrigues and Wolvaardt Seal Another Final Berth

Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt combined in a beautiful manner, continuing the flow of boundaries and making use of some sloppy fielding. Rodrigues fell while trying to accelerate, but the boundary was well in reach. Soon after, Wolvaardt hit Wareham over the boundary to seal the chase and ensure DC’s entry into yet another WPL final, ending a thrilling GG vs DC match.
